You Can't Change Other People!

Perhaps you are surprised that such a headline comes from me of all people.

Don't I preach again and again the statement that everyone can in principle achieve everything? And that anyone can therefore also change anything?

Yes, exactly, and that is the important difference: You can change everything about yourself, but you cannot change other people.

At least not directly.

But you can initiate and support the changes that others make in themselves.

That's obvious, because otherwise there would be no need for leadership.

After all, your people (and you yourself) must continue to develop if you want your team or company to be successful in the future.

By the way, anyone with teenage children knows this: you will find it very difficult to " command" change in young people. The only thing that works is to inspire them to change themselves.

Now, of course, comes the question, "How do I get others to change?" Here are three tips from my practice on this:

  1. Clarity about beliefs.
The biggest thing standing in the way of any change in ourselves is our beliefs. That is, our view of the world. What we think is right and wrong. What we believe we are and what we are not. And because this is only a belief - and not a reality - we can change it. But as a first step we have to know our beliefs. Most people are not aware of them. If you know your beliefs, however, you have an incredibly strong lever in your hand for substantial and sustainable changes.
So my tip is to help your people know their own beliefs. There are practical exercises for this. If you want to know more, ➔ just get in touch with me.
  2. Designing better futures.
Another important point for any sustainable change is full clarity about a desirable future that is different from the current state. It is important to be as specific as possible in this regard. What exactly will be different and better in one, three, or five years than it is today? And why is that important? Why do I or do we want this?
These questions can be worked out very well in dedicated workshops. The question of "why" in particular often has a lot of power.
  3. Adjust the environment.
Another important element for change is the adaptation of the environment. We often underestimate the strong influence our environment has on us. This includes the physical environment as well as people and information.
My tip is to make sure that the environment matches your future desired state and your changed beliefs. This will make any change much easier.

So here you have three powerful levers to help drive any change. If you have any questions ➔ get in touch.
