😊 Who Do You Make Happy Today?

Why are you doing what you are doing? Why do you get up each morning, work hard, and sacrifice much of your time? For money? No way! Money is nothing more than a means to an end. So, what’s your “end”? Freedom? Maybe. Influence? Possible.

The only thing that acts as a valid reward is happiness.

You want to feel happier. Yes, I know, if you are the always rational engineer or lawyer, you might think “I want only hard facts.” And even for you, besides all the “hard facts”, you only need to feel more fulfilled, more powerful, and freer. In one word: happier.

Here comes the point: one of the strongest triggers for our own happiness is when we make others happy.

There are countless studies that prove over and over again that we feel happier when we see others being happier because of us.

But, during our busy days – and even sometimes for weeks – we forget this simple truth. We are chasing many rewards and forget that at the end of the day, what counts most in our lives – and this includes business – is to make others feel better.

Now, to boil it down to some “hard facts”, here are three very concrete ideas that help you to act upon this paradigm:

  1. Define the purpose or mission of your business in a way that includes making other people’s lives better. This can be indirect, however, do not forget that the true reason for any business is to have a positive impact on the world and at least on your customers. Be very clear and articulate this.
  2. In all your daily routines, meetings, talks, and other activities ask the question: “How does what we are doing now have a positive impact on anybody?” If you have no clear answer, you might stop this activity.
  3. Make it a personal habit of making at least three people happier each day. This could be random people, your spouse, your kids, your co-workers, your boss, your customers, your team members, whoever crosses your paths: do something that improves the quality of this person’s life, just a bit. Only this little practice can make you a better person.
