We need better leadership!

There are things that we make more complicated than they are. In my view, leadership is one of these issues, because no matter which leaders you consider outstanding, it is most likely only a handful of characteristics that make a difference compared to the average.

So, why is it so difficult for many companies to implement outstanding leadership as a standard? I certainly perceive significant gaps in leadership in most companies.

The main reason for this is the fact that, on the one hand, leadership is made too complicated, and on the other, you almost always have to change your thinking and behavior in order to become a better leader. For the second reason, coaching is often a powerful accelerator.

Here are, from my experience, the three most important characteristics of top leaders:
  1. Creating clarity. I find it amazing how many leaders create confusion and promote complexity. Clarity starts with clear thinking, continues with clear language (a topic that is usually completely underestimated) and clear communication, and ends with a clear vision and clear expectations. Interestingly enough, the reason for lack of clarity is often fear. More about this in my coaching. Click here.
  2. Promote action. This means above all taking decisive action in the direction of the vision and to promote strategic initiatives. Many managers have enormous difficulty moving people from the comfort zone of daily routine to the growth zone of shaping the future. Top leadership is also characterized by the rapid achievement of ambitious goals. To achieve this, you have to move.
  3. Develop people. When I ask leaders how much of their time they invest in developing their people, it rarely exceeds 10 percent. This is where the greatest leverage for exponential results lies. As a top leader, the goal for you should be to develop your team in such a way that it achieves extremely challenging goals without your intervention.

If these leadership points make you see development potential for yourself, or for the people on your team, you should take a look at my Leadership Coaching. Click here for more information.
