Scarcity Or Abundance?

leadership mindset May 23, 2020

There is a mindset that is crucial for more or less success, privately or in business: Are your decisions guided by the belief that, in principle, everything is available in abundance or by the idea that there is a lack in everything?

Do you think that, if you have more of something, then someone else must have less? Or do you believe that, if you have more, others will benefit at the same time?

I can tell you, based on various studies, from my collaboration with numerous people, and from personal experience, this difference in mindset makes a huge difference for your success and your happiness in life.

Now, you can probably guess which of these two mindsets leads to more success. It is the belief that everything is available in abundance: happiness, money, prosperity, success, ideas, and so on.

From my experience, however, the other mindset prevails in most companies; scarcity rules.

If you change this mindset for yourself and your team, gates will open for more success.

However, the change of mindset is often difficult. Here are three steps that will guide you:

  1. Make it clear where in life and business you think in “trade-offs”, i.e., that others have fewer because you have more. Do you think customers have a disadvantage when buying at a higher price (a widespread misconception)? Or people have less time for their “work” when investing in further education (also widespread nonsense)?
  2. Whenever the language comes to alternatives (“should we do A or B?”), the answer is: “Very simple: A and B!”, provided both A and B make sense. The decision between two good alternatives almost always comes from the world of scarcity. Usually, both alternatives are possible and multiply success.
  3. Let your team define standards with the abundance mindset as a foundation: What if we could achieve much more, all at the same time? What if we could win more customers and – at the same time – sell at higher prices? What if we are implementing internal strategic initiatives and – at the same time – spend more time with our customers? And so on.
You will be amazed how much more you can create with your team if you change this setting. And it’s more fun.
