What will you get better at this year?

Welcome to the new year! I hope you had a pleasant start and begin the new year full of motivation and confidence.

My first question for this year as food for thought may seem a bit unusual: "What will you become better at this year?" Or, "What will you be significantly better at in 12 months than you are today?"

After all, most people tend to talk about goals and resolutions now. While this has its merits (I'm a big proponent of the importance of grand objectives), it often neglects a crucial aspect:

The biggest lever for your results and success is your own level in your thinking, behavior and skills.

That's why I suggest that right from the start you make sure that you get better in one important aspect every week. This requires systematic work on it.

You can, of course, choose from a variety of topics for personal growth. From my experience working with top leaders and society development, I particularly encourage the following three topics:
  1. Rational thinking. It may be surprising, but I find that we can all get better at rational thinking. Even technically well-educated people keep falling into mental traps and especially fail to think certain things through completely. This includes asking the right questions, distinguishing causality from correlation, and evaluating options. There is some good literature on the subject. Just get in touch if you want references on it.
  2. Understanding emotions. We can never fully understand other people (and hardly understand ourselves), but the world would certainly be a better place if we tried more seriously. Most of us have never learned to do this systematically. That's why examining each other's emotions is so important. It can and should be practiced. Ask me for the best resources.
  3. More impact. I always find it a shame how many good ideas fizzle out because they lack the necessary influence. Conversely, sometimes less good ideas prevail because the person advocating them plays the claviature of influence well. My recommendation is that you work specifically on strategies and tactics in the new year to become better at your influence.
So here you have three ideas for your personal growth. The most important thing now is for you to create a personal growth plan for 2022.

If you would like to explore these ideas in more depth individually, get in touch ➔ here.
