Time for more growth

leadership strategy Dec 10, 2020

When does the decline of a company begin? When the focus shifts from opportunities to problems. From attack to defense. From growth to maintaining the status quo.

That's why my latest publication in the Swiss magazine Organizer revolves around the necessary leap in growth. You can request the PDF of the article ➔ here (only in German).

It has always been true that those with more success and more influence have a distinct growth mindset and act accordingly. It is a well-known law of nature that what does not grow dies.

However, a good business with loyal customers does not simply disappear from the market. It can even work very profitably for a long time. But my point is this: this strategy is highly risky and is becoming even more so in today's world. If you play the hold game, you are exposed to greater pressure in every respect, from the sales market to the labor market.

And even more important: with low growth, you miss out on huge opportunities.

The good news is that almost every company can make a leap in growth and thus become significantly more successful in the long term.

Strong growth is consciously designed; here are its components:
  1. Mental work. "With time, our thoughts take on the color of the environment" is an old, true saying. When the team has been working for years in an environment with low growth, all thoughts are directed there. This is then the coordination system. And, at first, the thought of much stronger growth feels very uncomfortable. Thus, decisions continue to be made in the direction of stagnation.
  2. Foundations. Besides the discomfort from point 1, there is often a lack of ambition. A strong “why" is missing. In principle, the past determines the future: "What was good in the past will also be good tomorrow.” The first thing to do, therefore, is to define a strong “why" that makes a leap in growth the only alternative.
  3. Fresh blood. In most cases, you have to adjust the composition of your team for important changes of direction. I experience it again and again with my customers: while the old divisional manager is always finding reasons why you can't grow more strongly, within a few weeks, an ambitious successor opens up completely different possibilities. All of a sudden the business can be tripled. Or even more.

By the way, it is fascinating that these points also apply to your own personal growth. If you want to delve more deeply, please get in touch with me. Click here.
