They're always a thousand reasons against it.

leadership strategy Sep 05, 2019

Recently we spontaneously took the train over the Bernina Pass to Italy for two days. The Bernina mountain line is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, as one of only three railway lines in the world.

Especially in Switzerland, there are many fascinating railway lines, all of which have one thing in common: purely rational economic reasons could hardly ever justify the construction.

What was needed was the sometimes obsessive passion of individuals, coupled with a firm belief in the possibilities and in doing something good for the region. Also, it needs ongoing marketing, often even worldwide for the whole thing to be economically viable.

My point is this: at any given time, there have certainly been 1000 reasons not to carry out the project. And yet it was done. Why? Because it is hard and because we can do it. And because it does something good.

We can find it crazy or irresponsible. But exactly such a mindset, combined with passion and perseverance, moves us forward.

How does it look like in your company? In most cases, I can't find much of this "winning spirit".

Here are three foundations to create something really grandiose with your team:
  1. Passion. What are you and your team obsessed with (in a positive sense)? What do you believe in with all your soul? This passion can be generated (even passionate golfing is not innate). The reality: In most teams and companies I see tasks fulfilled instead of true passion.
  2. Courage. The legendary former Swiss Federal Councillor Adolf Ogi likes to talk about the "Windows of Opportunities" that have to be seized in large projects. This requires not only the passion but also the courage to take the lead as soon as such a "window of opportunity" opens. Instead, many managers prefer to wait (or have a further analysis carried out).
  3. Fighting Spirit. Yes, you need a certain fighting spirit to carry out great projects and also for every outstanding success. By the way, this can express itself very differently (e.g. if you think of Mahatma Gandhi). In too many companies I rather see indifference and the fear of getting one's hands dirty.
